2024 Spring Season Preserving Workshops

It is such a relief to have the lighter evenings back even if the temperatures don't alter that much, sometimes it is quite cold at this point. As we regroup for the Spring Season there will be a little looking back, homework to check, ideas to explore. There is always a sense of being raring to go but there is still not much fresh produce to preserve. Traditionally known as the hunger months - with good reason - this is where stocks and stores come into their own and in the days before 24/7 shopping it was crucial that you had not used too much, too quickly.

Some of the herbs should be through now so they were vital to add fresh flavour to food that had been stored through the Winter months. Root vegetables, pumpkins and squashes, potatoes - all of which people became sick of by this point in the year. That being said it was better than starving. How different are things today although all of those staple foods are great for economy where budgets are tight.

It's a good time to make sure you have everything in place once the early Summer fruits arrive and also to make things like mustards and and everyday brown sauce - my recipe uses white cabbage which is very much a vegetable of this time of year. So get organised, make some plans and see how creative you can be with what you have.

There are also seeds to be sown to provide some of those later fruits and vegetables for preserving so no time to lose!

Update: 24.3.24
There are so many people struggling to find the information that will help them have more control over their food security that we feel we have to be part of the solution. Going forward we have reduced the price of my Workshops down as far as we can, starting with this Spring Season. We hope to be able to do more as we go through the year. Please pass this information on as much as possible and consider joining with a friend to take the Workshop - the price is per Workshop not per person.

I've thoroughly enjoyed your workshops over the last year and have learnt so much about preserving - there's a whole world out there, not just jams! Your warm and friendly approach is greatly appreciated, and you answer all our questions with endless patience. Thanks for giving me the confidence to experiment - as you say, what could go wrong?!
